Former Bayern president insists Barca are not the same without Messi

Former Bayern Munich president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge believes the devastating effect of Lionel Messi's departure from Barcelona is still being felt at the club.

Speaking to Bild, Rummenigge said: "If you look at the [Barcelona] team, the way they performed tactically. Without Messi, their souls have been ripped out. They are facing difficult times.

"It was imperative to sell him. The Spanish league has scored an own goal with him," Rummenigge added.

Barca were outclassed at home by Bayern Munich in their Champions League opening game. Before kick-off, it was suggested that Barca are now more diverse and unpredictable without Messi.

However, the Blaugrana had not lost a game this season before the Bavarians came knocking - despite Messi leaving.
