List of players Busquets has denied playing time in Barca midfield

Miralem Pjanic's forced departure to Besiktas is not a coincidence as no player has managed to dislodge Sergio Busquets from Barcelona's holding midfield position.

The first to lose his spot in the starting line-up was Yaya Toure, who had to depart the Blaugrana and join Manchester City in 2010 in search of playing time.

"Without Busquets, I would not have left," Toure said in October 2010.

"He has great quality but what I want are games, not sitting on the bench."

Following Toure's departure, Barcelona signed Javier Mascherano to compete with Busquets, but the Argentine had to be moved to centre-back to enjoy playing time.

In 2012, the Catalans opted for Alex Song, who lasted just two and a half seasons at the Camp Nou, while neither of the two up-and-coming La Masia products, Sergi Samper and Oriol Busquets, managed to get playing time in midfield.

Following the arrival of Frenkie de Jong, the Dutchman was labelled as Busquets' heir in the deep-lying midfield position, but the latter managed to reinstate his undroppable status with some fine displays last season.

In his 14th campaign in the Barcelona first team, Busquets is still regarded as an undisputed starter for Ronald Koeman, with Pjanic being the latest player to pay the price.
