La Viola seemed to be in pole position to secure the services of the Chelsea defender, but Atalanta managed to complete his signing by offering €10m to the Blues.

“I don’t think Fiorentina are upset with me, these things happen many times in football,” Zappacosta told L’Eco di Bergamo.

“Fiorentina have a great team, they have a new coach and are very well organised.

“However, there are a few reasons behind my choice to join Atalanta. First of all, I am curious to work under Gasperini. I think I can further develop with him.

“Also, I spoke to Atalanta President in May after Genoa-Atalanta and he told me he’d have liked to take me back to Bergamo had he had a chance. In June, I told my agent that Atalanta was my priority. My target is to help the team now.”

Zappacosta completed a permanent move to the Gewiss Stadium, where he returned six years after moving to Torino.

The 29-year-old scored three goals in 29 appearances with La Dea in 2014-15. He made his season debut with La Dea in a 0-0 draw against Bologna last week.

The Italian right-back made his senior Italy debut in November 2016 and has 13 international caps to his name.

He joined Chelsea from Torino in the summer of 2017 in a €25m deal and played 52 games with the Premier League giants. He went out on loan at Roma and Genoa in the last two seasons.

Zappacosta’s contract at the Gewiss Stadium expires in June 2025.
