PSV 1 - 2 Monaco: Super sub Diop grabs dramatic winner

AS Monaco are on course to reach knockout football in European competition for the first time in five years after a dramatic 2-1 win away to PSV.

Sofiane Diop’s 89th minute strike earned the Ligue 1 side a last-gasp victory which sends them two points clear at the top of Group B.

It was a lively if unspectacular start in the Netherlands, until Monaco found themselves in front after 19 minutes.

The visitors had barely had a sight of goal until Boadu ran onto Caio Henrique’s inch-perfect ball over the top before expertly converting through the legs of Joël Drommel.

The PSV response was minimal as they struggled to live up to their domestic form. Marco van Ginkel had a tame header saved, but that was a rare opening as Monaco defended their area resolutely.

Indeed, Niko Kovač’s side looked most likely to score next, with Jean Lucas curling wide from 20-yards, whilst Boadu was twice denied shooting opportunities by last-gasp tackles.

Eindhoven looked stronger after the break. Gakpo picked up a loose ball in midfield and forced a stop out of goalkeeper Alexander Nübel, who then superbly denied Carlos Vinícius by getting a strong left palm on a fierce low shot.

Van Ginkel then had another shot saved before the pressure finally told as Gakpo levelled by wonderfully finding the bottom corner with a vicious 20-yard strike.

It was no more than PSV deserved, and they were soon pushing for a winner. Phillipp Mwene powerfully fired straight at Nübel and Yorbe Vertessen fired wide.

Monaco were always likely to be dangerous on the break, and saw Wissam Ben Yedder’s shot saved before grabbing the points against the run of play when substitute Diop converted Henrique’s cross from close range
