Former Bafana Star Maimane Phiri Released From Hospital, Thanks South Africa for Support

Maimane Alfred Phiri has been discharged from hospital and will continue his recovery at his home.

Phiri was admitted to hospital after he was shot twice during an altercation in his tavern in December 2021.

After he was discharged from hospital, Maimane Phiri released a statement in which he thanked everyone for their support.

Ex-Bafana Bafana player Maimane Alfred Phiri has finally been released from hospital and is thankful for all the support he received since he was shot.

Phiri was shot twice in his tavern in Alexandra on December 30 after he tried to intervene when a gunman attempted to shoot a woman.

Phiri was shot in the arm and leg while another patron of the tavern was killed. The gunman then shot himself dead. A police investigation into the matter is still ongoing.

Phiri remained critical but stable while in hospital until his progress was promising enough that he could be discharged. The South African confirmed that Phiri was in some discomfort but recovering and would continue his recovery at home.

After he was discharged, the former Bafana star drafted out a statement in which he thanked everyone for their support.

"I just want to take this time to thank the loving people of SA for their well wishes, prayers and support you have shown my family and me through the past two weeks. From the bottom of my heart, I say thank you," Maimane said, News24 reported.

"I have since been discharged from hospital and am continuing with my recovery at home surrounded by my family and close friends.

"Finally, I want to send a special thank you to the medical staff of Edenvale hospital and Netcare Milpark for their outstanding work."
