Wigan look set for Championship return

Wigan now have a seven-point cushion on third place Rotherham and The Latics look set for a return to the Championship at the second time of asking. Leam Richardson’s side are unbeaten in their last nine league games and have been incredibly solid in the closing stages of the season when it matters most. Wigan have made the DW Stadium a fortress this campaign, they have lost once at home in 2022 and they have the fourth best home record in League One this season. A victory over Cambridge on Saturday would go a long way to sealing promotion.

Cambridge form is patchy

Cambridge United’s form over the past couple of months has been patchy at best. Mark Bonner’s side have won three of their last four matches, prior to this run it was five without a win and his players may well have taken their eye off the ball with little to play for in the remainder of the season. Cambridge have conceded 13 goals in their last five away matches, this includes two clean sheets which highlights just how inconsistent they have been of late.

Side with both teams scoring

I would be confident of a home win at DW Stadium on Saturday, but I would also be hopeful of a few goals. Cambridge have scored in 16 of their 21 away league matches this season (76%) and these 21 away matches have averaged 3.04 goals per game. Four goals were scored when these two sides met at Abbey Stadium in November, and we can be hopeful of another exciting game as the visitors will be able to play with freedom with little riding on Saturday’s match.

Wigan to win and both teams to score in the match will be the main selection for this contest. There have been few chinks in Wigan’s armour as they entered the most crucial months of the season and there is no reason to desert them now. Cambridge United’s goal return in their away matches this season provides hope they will be good for at least a consolation on Saturday. In the correct score market, I will chance a 2-1 Wigan win.
