VIDEO: Saint-Etienne Fans Attack Own Players After League 1 Relegation

There were ugly scenes as Saint-Etienne suffered relegation from Ligue 1 at the hands of Auxerre on Sunday night, with their fans invading the pitch, launching projectiles and chasing the players off the pitch as soon as the match ended.

Les Verts were contesting the second leg of their relegation play-off against the Ligue 2 side at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard following their 18th-place finish in the French top flight.

Both instalments ended 1-1, with Auxerre ultimately winning 5-4 on penalties to secure promotion to Ligue 1 at Saint-Etienne's expense.

As soon as the winning penalty hit the back of the net, chaos ensued - as captured by French journalist Adrien Blettery.

Hordes of angry fans can be seen streaming onto the pitch, with some launching projectiles in the form of flares and fireworks. The Saint-Etienne players can be seen fleeing down the tunnel.

Per 90min FR, a large group of police officers defended the tunnel and have surrounded the stadium.

Saint-Etienne had been in Ligue 1 since 2004, while this is Auxerre's first promotion in a decade.
