Victoria Beckham's friends have hit back at Rio Ferdinand after he claimed he had "never seen her eat anything" in the years he's known her.

Footballing legend Rio, 44, said while speaking to Australian radio hosts Kyle and Jackie O: "I've never seen her eat anything. I don't remember anything that sticks out of my memory, to be honest."

Host Jackie "O" Henderson said that she was "obsessed" with Posh Spice's diet, as the Spice Girl is said to be notoriously picky with her food.

But sources close to Victoria, 48, have hit back, branding people's obsession with her eating habits "bizarre".

They told The Sun: "Victoria has spoken a lot about what she eats and to say she doesn't is a load of nonsense.

"Why people are interested in what she eats is bizarre. Victoria has made no secret of the food she enjoys and doesn't make an issue of it – so why people comment on it is baffling."

While Rio made a dig over Victoria's eating habits, he did confirm on the radio show that "she is nice" when asked by Jackie.

Over the years, mum-of-four Victoria has spoken openly about what she has dubbed her "extreme" diet.

Husband and Rio's former teammate David Beckham once said that Victoria "only eats grilled fish and vegetables".

He also joked that Victoria had "eaten the same thing for the last 25 years".

But Victoria hit back, telling Vogue Australia that David's comments made her "sound boring", when she instead fills her diet with "healthy fat" and detoxes by avoiding alcohol.

She said: "I mean, talk about making me sound boring! No. What he meant is that he's never met anyone who is more disciplined with the way that they eat.

"I eat lots of healthy fat: fish, avocado, nuts, that sort of thing. I do drink alcohol, unless I have a reason not to.

"I'll detox from anything for three to six months where I won't drink. I'm quite extreme in anything I do, whether it's eating or working out or drinking or not drinking."
