Norwich 1-2 Man Utd: Fernandes, Rashford, Lingard Unable To Beat Ighalo’s Ratings

Norwich 1-2 Man Utd Ighalo’s Ratings
Manchester United have qualified for the FA Cup semi-finals after beating Norwich City 2-1 in extra time on Saturday.

Odion Ighalo scored the opener for a dominant United side, before Todd Cantwell levelled.

Norwich were reduced to 10 men in the final few minutes after Timm Klose was given his marching orders.

From that moment, United created attack after attack, and finally got the decisive breakthrough in the 118th minute to avoid the lottery of penalties.

Reflecting on the match at Carrow Road, here is United’s player ratings below.

MANCHESTER UNITED:
Sergio Romero: 6. Fifteenth appearance of the season and his easiest until Cantwell’s 75th minute strike – which he could possibly have got a hand to. Punched away a late cross with authority. EPA

Diogo Dalot: 5. Rustier than a bolt on the Titanic. Attacking intent but 32nd minute error led to a Cantwell attack. One league start this season but three successive FA Cup starts. Will be fortunate to start in the semis

Luke Shaw: 6. Got in good positions, though heavy touches. Cross set up opener and effective decoys as game went on.

Eric Bailly: 5. Initially looked as anxious as the Liver bird on Friday night as he exaggerated early dive, then trod on and lost ball. Headed a 30th minute corner towards Ipswich rather than the goal. And struck a 99th minute shot, which just landed in Sweden.

Harry Maguire: 7. Stopped Rupp’s shot and Norwich’s best first half chance after 43 minutes. Made key blocks, nearly headed a winner then scored the winner after 123 minutes of football. Showed why he’s captain.

Fred: 7. Steady, safe, made blocks. Dealt with Aarons and defended when needed. Super ball to set up Fernandes.

Scott McTominay: 6. Gorgeous first half flick to Ighalo but as pedestrian as Norwich city centre and flat as the rest of his team playing in front of no fans.

Juan Mata: 5. Limited influence in a first half attack which was slower than a tractor with flat tyres. Knocked off ball for Maclean’s chance, but assisted Ighalo’s goal despite having three opponents around him.

Bruno Fernandes: 6. United’s only creative player in the first half. Great pass to Igahlo, but no LASK style finish. Made stray passes, struck a weak free-kick and fluffed Fred’s ball – so he’s human after all.

Jesse Lingard: 5. No league starts since New Year’s Day, but has featured more in cups. Bright start with his quick feet, but needed a better performance to convince many doubters.

Odion Ighalo: 6. Little service prior to goal, then swivelled to continue record of scoring in every United game he’s started – a complicated chance to finish. Writes ‘scores goals’ as his occupation on official documents.

Marcus Rashford (63′) 6. Little impact until a shot in extra time and fine ball towards Martial.

Mason Greenwood (63′) 7: Lively and a direct threat. Stretched Norwich and shot wide after 79.

Brandon Williams (63′) 6: Energy, enthusiasm.

Paul Pogba (78′) 7: Played Greenwood in to make quick impact. United a better team with him on the pitch. Clever ball in for Maguire’s winner.

Nemanja Matic (78′) 6: Still hasn’t given the ball away since 1987.

Anthony Martial (96′) 7: United’s best substitute. Nice touches.
