Mikel Arteta: Liverpool and City win will convince Aubameyang to sign new deal

Arsenal striker Aubameyang scored a brace in the FA Cup semi-final win over City,

The boss Mikel Arteta says the striker has delivered a perfect response to his critics, who doubted his ability to score against big teams.

Arteta adds that moments like this could convince the Gabonese that the Gunners are moving in the right direction and eventually sign the deal.

Aubameyang's future is still up in the air. Mikel Arteta was asked on whether nights like this will help convince the striker to stay.

"I think it will help everybody," the boss replied as quoted by Arsenal's website.

"These beautiful moments are always better than the bad ones and when I look at him and speak to him he sounds pretty convinced, but obviously if he can see the success and direction that we’re taking is the right one, I think he will be more positive about it, yes."

Aubameyang has responded to those critics, who claimed that the Gabonese is struggling to deliver against big opponents. After scoring a brace the striker has posted the following tweet.

Arteta was asked to comment on it.

"Yeah, but it’s like it with David [Luiz]. Big players [get criticised] more than any others and even when they do well, people are going to criticise you, but he showed today on the pitch. Not from talking, but on the pitch."

After his double against the Citizens, Aubameyang has 25 goals to his name across all competitions this season.

In total, the 31-year-old has managed 65 goals since his debut in February 2018. Out of all Premier League players, only Mohamed Salah has netted more (68) over that period.

Arsenal can't afford to lose such a goal-machine and have to meet his demands to keep the lethal striker beyond the summer of 2021.
