The Liverpool Echo reports Jurgen Klopp and his players flew out to Austria on Saturday morning via private jet and arrived in Salzburg to begin pre-season and get set to launch a staunch defence of their Premier League crown.

Just 48 days separate the end of last season and the start of the next and Liverpool took the decision not to give their squad a lengthy break with Klopp's players instead permitted just a week of holiday time.

A number of young stars were also involved including talented centre-back Billy Koumetio while the likes of Curtis Jones, Rhian Brewster, Harvey Elliott, Neco Williams, Ki-Jana Hoever, Sepp van den Berg and Caoimhin Kelleher also took part.

The likes of Nathaniel Phillips, Marko Grujic and Loris Karius were also all present and joined in the session led by the manager.

Xherdan Shaqiri, Takumi Minamino, Naby Keita and Gini Wijnaldum all got stuck into the session too with the rest of the first-team squad although Trent Alexander-Arnold was not picture while Jordan Henderson was also missing as he continues his injury recovery. The captain did fly out to Austria, however, having posted a picture of himself to social media with Virgil van Dijk on a scooter.
