Arsenal young star Eddie Nketiah close to breaking Alan Shearer's record, backed to be call-up to England senior team.

Nketiah has scored four in the latest fixtures against Kosovo and Austria U21s.

Eddie is just one goal behind the England legend's goal haul at the youth level.

Aidy Boothroyd says the Gunner will draw Southgate's attention soon if he keeps scoring for the Young Lions and Arsenal.

"That's the nature of the job," Aidy Boothroyd told the Evening Standard when asked if he could lose Eddie Nketiah to the senior team. "If it means another player's moving up, that's brilliant. It means they're doing really well to be anywhere near the manager's thoughts.

"So if that happens it's great, we'll just find the next one. Comparing him to some of the others who have gone up already, I think he's at a similar stage.

"He's competing against some of the best players in the country and if he keeps scoring and he keeps doing it for his club and for us, then he's going to be asking questions isn't he?

"Yes, he can do it, but it's good he gets experiences like this because he didn't have an easy game tonight.

"He got kicked from pillar to post, which does happen when you're a centre-forward as good as he is. He has to deal with it and tonight he did that and scored."

Nketiah has found the net 12 times in just ten goals for the Under-21 side; with the goal against Austria, Eddie moved within a shot of Alan Shearer's goalscoring record for England Under-21.

Last season, the striker six month on loan at Leeds before being recalled by Arsenal in January due to lack of competitive starts in the Championship.

Nketiah is likely to stay Arsenal for the coming campaign as no reports concerning another loan spell have emerged so far.
