The French defender is open to returning to his former club as he wants to play more regularly.
Lyon have started the Samuel Umtiti operation and the talks are now open, L'Equipe have just reported.
The French side have long been interested in the return of their former defender and there are some positive movements.
The centre-back is now open to the move because he wants to play regularly ahead of the European Championship next summer.
Lyon plan to sign Umtiti on a loan deal, something that both parties would agree on.
Even though Barca would prefer selling the defender, they would accept a loan deal if Lyon agree to pay part of Umtiti's salary.
Still, the Ligue 1 side are a bit concerned with the player's huge wages and shocking injury history.
Umtiti is yet to start training with the group after the knee injury relapse he suffered in early July.
Multiple sources name the 26-year-old defender as the next candidate to leave Barca after the exits of Ivan Rakitic, Arturo Vidal and Luis Suarez.
