Olivier Giroud's reveals Chelsea strike competition won't be easy for Timo Werner
Olivier Giroud is ready to fight for his place with the signing of another striker
"Everyone knows I was close to leaving Chelsea last winter," Olivier Giroud said, as quoted by L'Equipe. "I took my chance after the transfer window. It was a big victory for me and a big challenge.
"I am confident for the coming year which will be good and busy at Chelsea. In every big club, there is competition. It motivates me. I still want to fight for my place.
"I am not naive. The club recruited Timo Werner to play, but we don't have the same profile. If it had been a striker with the same profile, I would have been more worried."
Last season, Giroud showed an incredible ability to take his chances. The Frenchman started the season as Frank Lampard's third-choice striker. A true professional, the 33-year-old never complained and kept working hard and finished the campaign as a starter.
After the restart of the season, Giroud took part in 12 of Chelsea's 13 games across all competitions, started 9 of them and scored 7 goals. As a result, Chelsea, who were eager to part ways with Olivier in January, offered the veteran a new one-year contract instead.
