Premier League executive backs Chelsea's transfer success in light of Jurgen Klopp's barbed remarks

Richard Masters understands that clubs are in different states now thanks to the Covid-19 crisis.

However, the ultimate aim of the competition is to showcase the best players out there on the pitch.

That's why new faces can only be a good thing for the league, the executive argues.

"Part and parcel of running Premier League clubs is to put the best side on the pitch," Richard Masters, the league's chief executive, said as quoted by the Evening Standard.

"Some clubs are in a period of transition at the moment, others aren’t and, obviously, you can see some of the figures out there, everyone can see the cost of those purchases over the period of contract, and clubs are having to make difficult decisions. We welcome new faces to the Premier League as they add interest to the competition."

The executive has made this remark in light of Jurgen Klopp's recent dig at Chelsea's spending this summer at the time when Liverpool have only managed to bring in one player for mere ₤11.75m.

Given the Reds' advantage over the rest of the pack last season, it's not a surprise to see the league's representatives supporting Chelsea's efforts to catch up with them - this will only make for a more attractive product, especially if Chelsea pose a serious challenge for the title.
