Gimenez Join Chelsea’s Defence

Chelsea’s interest in Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez is set to be intensified next summer, according to reports from England.

Frank Lampard is looking to sign a new central defender next summer and have marked the Uruguayan defender as his primary target.

Gimenez has a release clause in his contract and the Blues could be tempted to trigger that clause.

Chelsea signed Thiago Silva this summer and the veteran defender has been impressing enough to earn a new contract for next season.

Despite that the Stamford Bridge outfit are keen on signing a younger central defender for their long-term project.

West Ham United‘s Declan Rice remains a target but the English international is considered as too expensive while the Hammers won’t let him leave.

Gimenez has been a first-team regular at Atletico for the past three seasons, having developed under the wings of former Atletico defender Diego Godin.

Since the veteran defender left the Spanish club, Gimenez has become the leader of their defense, earning interest from clubs all around Europe.
