Gerard Pique injured his knee against Atletico Madrid this weekend and the experienced defender is set to miss at least two to three months.
With other defenders also out injured, Clement Lenglet is currently the only central defender in Nou Camp.
Ronald Koeman’s side are looking for a short-term option and may have found one already.
According to reports from Spain, Barcelona have made contact with the representatives of Garay.
The Argentinian has been a free agent ever since Valencia decided not to offer him a new contract as the club had to clear out their massive wage bill during the summer.
Garay has been looking for a new club, but has not found a new employer yet.

Barcelona are currently exploring the possibilities of signing the 34-year-old on a short-term contract until the end of the summer.
