The Blues have not conceded a goal in their last 4 games and scored 7 goals in the last 2 games with Lampard finally getting his tactics right - Chelsea fan @PatNevinWasGood sums up the football we've played since the Sevilla draw and the tactical flexibility of this team.
User PatNevinWasGood writes on The Guardian's website: "This is mad, 360 minutes without conceding, coupled with 360-degree football, a joy to watch. Brilliant win for Chelsea, particularly when you think they’d been to Russia midweek.
"But credit to Burnley, particularly first half, who dug in and made Chelsea work, the Woods Zouma subplot was fascinating, which Woods really could have profited from. Zouma’s positioning was erratic, except that wonderful bullet header he scored with. However, the need for Chelsea to score and score often was not quite as apparent and eventually became irrelevant as Chelsea took total control with some sublime football.
"So, solid tactics by Lampard to go with Kante as the holding mid, in a 4-3-3, against a deep-lying team. Kante regularly dropped in between Zouma and Silva to create a three against Burnley’s front two. Some of the rotations between the attacking players and the centre mids was a joy to watch.
"Clearly work had been done on the transition from attack to defence. Far from perfect though and for the second game in a row Chelsea started the second half poorly, Havertz, in particular, was poor defensively. The second goal helped settle the team, Zouma with a very curt header.
"Mendy could open a tin of sardines with his feet, his unflappable distribution is excellent, better than Chilwell’s on the day!
"It’s now taken for granted, but Chelsea started with 3 academy players (4 if you count Zouma). They had 5 at one point, astonishing and a tribute to Lampard and his coaches. They all played well, but James was outstanding.
"Chelsea must build on this, but the flexibility to change formations dependant on opponents is heartening. Personally, I would stick with a 4-3-3 bit I’ll leave those decisions to the parsimonious Lampard."
Chelsea has not conceded a goal in their last 4 games and has won their last 2 matches very convincingly. Mendy looks settled in the team and has been immense and while the attack could do better in certain situations, we can't complain about 7 goals in our last 180 minutes!
The 4-3-3 might just be the answer we need to defeat a low block like Burnley's and it seems that slowly but surely, Lampard is getting his team and his tactics in order.
Our next 2 games before the international break could set the tone for the hectic November and December schedule - we're sure that the Blues will give it their all to win against Rennes and Sheffield United!
