Kevin Campbell: 'I do not agree with those who belief we were wrong to sell Martinez'

Campbell insists that Martinez did not pay enough games for the Gunners to judge him properly.

The ex-striker says Arsenal need a keeper who's proved he can bounce back after tough spells.

“I do not agree with those who believe we were wrong to sell Martinez,” Kevin Campbell told Football Insider.

“He was unbelievable when Leno was injured. He looked assured, comfortable, good with the ball at his feet and made some great saves but here is what I will say.

“Martinez was at the club a long time and there were no calls for Martinez before that purple patch

“That was not enough to make him number one. He has not played enough games, he does not have that core game time behind him to go through the tough times.

“It is hard because he has never gone through that sticky patch yet. You do not want a goalkeeper going through that at Arsenal.

“Leno has the experience from Germany, they paid good money for him to be the number one so I think he deserves it. Mikel Arteta has made his decision.”

Arsenal sold the Argentine to Aston Villa for around £20m. The 28-year-old has kept four clean sheets so far this season, conceding 11 goals.
