Uncertainty over Aguero’s future and concerns over injuries prompted City to consider signing a replacement last summer – and the Belgian was the target they identified.
City were unwilling to pursue Lukaku, 27, after Inter Milan placed a £93.75million price tag on his head.
Inter signed the Belgian from Manchester United for £74million only 12 months earlier but believed his stock had risen substantially thanks to his 34-goal debut season at San Siro.
Lukaku struck nine goals in the Europa League last season as Inter reached the final of the competition, where they were overcome by Sevilla.
Meanwhile, City have struggled in front of goal in Aguero’s absence and slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Tottenham on Saturday evening.

With Gabriel Jesus their only available centre-forward, City are already looking at potential targets for next summer.
