Crystal Palace Reveal Their First Signing Of The January Window

Crystal Palace Signing Mateta

Crystal Palace have added to their attacking ranks as the complete signing of Jean-Philippe Mateta from Mainz.

The striker could potentially make his Palace debut in Tuesday’s visit of West Ham to Selhurst Park.

Mateta is joining on an initial 18-month loan with an obligation for the deal to be made permanent if certain criteria are met.

Palace are paying a €3 million loan fee up front and would a further €15 million would be due in the summer of 2022 to secure the 23-year-old on a three-year contract.

There is scope for the Premier League club to break the arrangement at certain points over the loan deal.

His arrival will almost certainly mean Christian Benteke, once Palace’s record signing at £27 million from Liverpool, will depart Selhurst Park in the summer under freedom of contract.

Mateta said: “I’m very happy to come to Crystal Palace and I look forward to training. Playing in the Premier League was my dream when I was a child.

“Now I can play, I will show the fans of Crystal Palace what I can do.”
