La Liga Confirms Messi’s Ban For Lashing Out In Super Cup Final Loss

La Liga Confirms Messi's Ban Super Cup Final

Barcelona star Lionel Messi will now serve a two-game ban for the red card he received in his side’s Super Cup final defeat to Athletic Bilbao, escaping a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The 33-year-old was given his marching orders after lashing out at Asier Villalibrel, with Barcelona trailing 3-2 in extra-time.

It was the first time Messi has ever been sent off for Barcelona, having received two red cards for Argentina previously.

Shortly after the final it was reported that he could be in line to face a 12-game ban because the incident was so serious.

However, La Liga have confirmed that Messi will serve just a two-game suspension.

The Argentina superstar will miss Barcelona’s games against Cornella and Elche.

Speaking about the flash point at full-time, Barca boss Ronald Koeman said: “I can understand what Messi did.

“I don’t know how many times they fouled him, and it’s normal to react when they keep trying to foul you as a player who is looking to dribble with the ball, but I need to see it again properly.”
