Opinion: Underlying Reason Behind Man Utd’s 1-1 Draw With West Brom

Man Utd's 1-1 Draw With West Brom

The Red Devils yet again, lose four vital points in two back to back draws.

Match proceedings began early on in the second minute when West Brom took the lead through Mbaye Diagne, who headed in a cross from Connor Gallagher.

Man United were only able to get an equaliser after 44 minutes when Luke Shaw set up Bruno Fernandes for a beautiful Stunner- the volley flew past Sam Johnstone, West Brom’s goalkeeper.

The second half saw efforts from Greenwood and Mc Tominay hooked away, by goal-line clearances.

Diagne was unable to net a second, as he disappointingly did not convert two clear-cut chances. In the final stoppage minute, Sam Johnstone decided the fate of the fixture remained at 1-1 by denying Harry Maguire’s header from entering the net.

Now, a matter of concern to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be the manner in which they did not win the match.

Apart from conceding an early goal which was later equalised, an underlying reason seems to cause Manchester United vital points.

Any sport enthusiast would confidently point out that, Manchester United’s failure to utilize the bulky possession they had in the match caused them to further lose grip in the total chase.

Solskjaer’s side made over two times the number of passes West Brom made and had no big chances created.

Although Man Utd were able to make seven shots on target producing one goal, they enjoyed nearly three-quarters of possession and couldn’t do more with it.

Below is a short comparison table of some match statistics which show that Manchester United could have done better than a 1-1 draw with West Brom.

Statistics Man Utd West brom
Match Possession (%) 73 27
Total Passes 679 247
Passes completed 586 160

Manchester United are currently tied second with Leicester on 46 points and are seven points adrift of Manchester City who have an outstanding match.

If Manchester United were to put significant pressure on their noisy neighbours, they would need to turn possession stats into wins.
