Newcastle 2-2 Tottenham: Spurs’ Top-Four Hopes Dented

It looked as if Newcastle were on for yet another defeat after Harry Kane struck twice in a five-minute period for Tottenham following Joelinton’s opener for Steve Bruce’s side.

But Joe Willock finished from close range in last few minutes to earn a share of the spoils and leave Spurs two points adrift of Chelsea in fourth.

Newcastle are three-points clear of 18th-placed Fulham but could still drop into the bottom three on goal difference if the Cottagers beat Aston Villa.

It was the home side who took the lead four minutes later when Matt Ritchie picked up possession wide on the left and fed Sean Longstaff, whose pass was perfectly weighted for Joelinton to fore past the helpless Lloris.

However, the lead lasted just seconds when Emil Krafth could only serve up the ball to Kane as he attempted to cut out Giovani Lo Celso’s cross and the striker tapped into the empty net.

Worse was to follow for Newcastle with 34 minutes gone when midfielder Tanguy Ndombele split the defence to find Kane, who dispatched the ball past Martin Dubravka to make it 2-1.

Steve Bruce’s men regrouped as the half-time whistle approached, but found themselves largely on the back foot as Spurs made it to the break 2-1 ahead.

The Magpies forced their way back on level terms with five minutes remaining when Joelinton headed Ritchie’s cross back across goal and although Lloris kept out Miguel Almiron’s header, substitute Willock crashed home the equaliser off the underside of the bar.
