Frank, an ex-Chelsea player, explains why Messi should not be awarded the Ballon d'Or.

Frank Leboeuf, a former Chelsea player, has stated that Lionel Messi of Paris Saint-Germain should not be nominated for the Ballon d'Or this year due to a red card he received last season while at Barcelona.

Messi was been nominated as one of the 30-man nominees for the 2021 Ballon d'Or.

This year, the Argentina captain will compete for the Ballon d'Or against Chelsea's Cesar Azpilicueta, N'Golo Kante, Romelu Lukaku, Mason Mount, and Jorginho, Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski, and Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo, among others.

Messi has already won the Ballon d'Or six times, which is a record.

"In 2000 and 2006, Zidane did not have the Ballon d'Or because he had taken a red card each time," Leboeuf told Telefoot.

"Messi received a red card for a punch in the Spanish Supercopa, which can be counted." We shouldn't give it to Messi if we didn't give it to Zizou."

On November 29, the winner of this year's Ballon d'Or will be announced.
