Inter 1 - 1 Juventus: Dybala saves Juve at San Siro

A late Paolo Dybala penalty meant it was honours even in a tight and nervy Derby d’Italia, as the Uruguayan’s effort cancelled out a first-half Edin Džeko strike in a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. Inter remain without back-to-back home wins against Juventus since 2010 as a result.

The opening stages were played at a frantic pace. Juventus went close when Samir Handanović failed to gather Álvaro Morata’s fierce shot, with Alex Sandro failing to turn the rebound home. Ten minutes later, the hosts took the lead as Hakan Çalhanoğlu’s deflected thunderbolt rocketed back off the woodwork and to the feet of Džeko, who was left with a simple tap-in.

The early departure of Federico Bernardeschi due to a shoulder injury hampered Juventus’ response to going behind, and they could only muster long-range efforts from Dejan Kulusevski and Juan Cuadrado, with the Colombian going closest as his 25-yard effort zipped wide of Handanović’s post.

As Juventus toiled and the tempo of the game dropped, it was only a matter of time until Massimiliano Allegri looked to his bench to change the game, with the returning Dybala and the rested Federico Chiesa the obvious options. The duo were introduced with 25 minutes remaining, and almost immediately the visitors had a fluency and creativity that was previously lacking.

Dybala fired in a free-kick that forced Handanović into a save down low, and it would be the 27-year-old talisman who would grab a point for the visitors. With two minutes of normal time left, Denzel Dumfries caught Alex Sandro just inside the box, and Dybala coolly slotted the penalty home - meaning he has now converted 18 of his previous 20 penalties.

Despite the morale-boosting late strike, the 'Bianconeri' are still 10 points behind Serie A leaders Napoli. Inter, meanwhile, are in third place as they continue to settle into life under new boss Simone Inzaghi.
