VfL Wolfsburg of Germany forward, Lukas Nmecha is heading towards a full senior international debut with the country where he plies his football trade, as the Nigerian-born lad has been invited for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Liechtenstein and Armenia.
The 22-year-old Nmecha, who has already played for Germany at youth level, is the only new invitee in Die Mannschaft coach, Hansi Flick’s squad for next week’s games.
Megasportsarena.com reports that this could mean an end to hope being held by Super Eagles’ fans that the former Manchester City of England youngster would play for their country.
He was born to a Nigerian father and German mother in Hamburg but was raised in Manchester, England, which made him eligible to feature for the three countries.
Germany now look set to cap-tie Nmecha, who has made a fine start to his debut season at Wolfsburg, after his permanent signing from Man City and he has scored five goals in 13 appearances across all competitions.
It is also a dream come true for the mulatto kid, who previously played for England’s U16, U17, U18, U19, U20 and U21 teams, with a total of 31 appearances, before he switched to represent Germany at U21 level.
Just few months ago, Nmecha showed where his allegiance and loyalty lies, as he described Germany as his home, thereby signaling an early intention to snub reported moves by Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to secure his services.
Nmecha told the German Bundesliga website: “I see Germany as my home. I lived in Hamburg until I was nine, and still have a strong connection to the city and the people.”
