Nmecha’s Invitation To Germany’s Senior Team Shocks NFF’s Officials

The invitation of VfL Wolfsburg youngster, Lukas Nmecha to Germany’s senior national team has left officials of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in shock.

Megasportsarena.com gathered that the NFF top shits gad all along believed that Nmecha would follow on the footsteps of other players born in Germany and opt for Nigeria at full senior level.

Among those who the top shots felt Nmecha would follow their examples are Leon Aderemi Balogun, Emil Maduka Okoye and Kevin Akpoguma.

The NFF big wigs, it was further gathered, had been banking on current Super Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr, who is of Franco-German heritage, to sway Nmecha towards allegiance with Nigeria.

There had also been pressure on his Nigerian father and the fact that he initially played alongside Eagles’ attacker, Kelechi Iheanacho at Manchester City of England.

However, the mulatto youngster, whose younger brother, Felix, is also a German youth international, hinted all along that his loyalty was with the country of his birth.

Much to the consternation of Nigeria’s football egg heads, Nmecha has gleefully welcomed the invitation to Germany’s senior squad and is primed to feature for them in two upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

His argument all along had been that he feels more German than Nigerian, since he was born in Hamburg and his mother hails from Monchengladbach.

Nonetheless, an NFF source, who pleaded anonymity, told megasportsarena.com on Saturday that they were all shocked on hearing that Nmecha had been invited by Germany’s head coach, Hans Flick.

The source added: “We were surprised with the news because we had all along been assured that he would switch allegiance to play for the Super Eagles.

“We thought that our coach and some of the other players that were born in Germany but now play for us would convince him to follow them.

“We also felt he would consider his chances of playing at the World Cup would be better with the Super Eagles, but see what has happened. It’s a real surprise to everyone at the NFF.” Bimbo Adeola
