Alayanspor defender Awaziem Remains Doubtful Against Sudan, Omeruo Bounces Back In Training

Alayanspor of Turkey defender, Chidozie Awaziem remains in doubt for action with the Super Eagles against Sudan in their next match at the Africa Cup of Nations, but Leganes of Spain stopper, Kenneth Omeruo bounced back in training on Wednesday.

Omeruo bowed out with a knock under no pressure in Tuesday’s game against Egypt, thereby raising fears about another fitness issue in the Eagles’ camp, but the real worry now is on Awaziem, who has been nursing a hamstring complaint since October.

Though he eventually managed to scale some fitness tests during the first phase of the Eagles’ pre-AFCON 2021 camping in Abuja, observes recalled how the versatile defender had been sidelined for a week by a hamstring injury in October.

e360hubs.com reports that the former FC Porto and Boavista of Portugal player, who has also previously played for Rizespor of Turkey, further missed a couple of games for Alanyaspor in December due to the same problem.

Subsequently, Awaziem, who also previously played for FC Nantes of France, was again missing when the Eagles returned to training 24 hours after their epic victory over Egypt, as drills resumed at VSTS-ANNEX, Roumde Adija Stadium in Garoua.

Information on offer from the Eagles’ camp indicate that Awaziem did not show in training due to a health issue, which also saw him omitted from the squad that defeated Egypt and he was not even at the stadium for that game.

A report by allnigeriasoccer.com added: “Players that started and played majority of the game against the North Africans took part in a recovery session while the others that didn’t taste action or came in as late substitutes trained fully.

“The starters such as William Troost-Ekong, Wilfred Ndidi, Ola Aina and Joe Aribo jogged around the pitch under the guidance of assistant coach Joseph Yobo.

“A piece of cheering news is that CD Leganes central defender Kenneth Omeruo was involved in the recovery session, participating in all the exercises without any discomfort, so he may be alright to face Sudan this coming Saturday.

“Omeruo had to make way for Semi Ajayi with eleven minutes remaining against Egypt on Tuesday after picking up an injury.

“Those that did not play a part in the match at all or got few minutes were being drilled by another assistant manager Paul Aigbogun, and their session was based on ball-work and shooting practice.”
