Atletico Madrid are looking to replace Kieran Trippier who left for Newcastle United, and Cesar Azpilicueta features prominently on their shortlist, according to ESPN.
The 32-year-old's contract with Chelsea expires this summer, and he's already free to negotiate directly with overseas clubs.
Atletico have already contacted the player's representatives, as he is one of their preferred targets, along with Valencia's Daniel Wass.
However, Chelsea continue to pursue a contract extension for the club captain and are very unlikely to sanction his departure in January.
Earlier reports suggested that Azpilicueta held positive talks with Chelsea, but the sides are still some way from reaching an agreement.
