Luuk de Jong to miss Linares clash due to red card he picked up v Barcelona

According to Diario Sport, Luuk de Jong is not eligible to feature against Linares on Wednesday in the Spanish Cup Round of 32 clash.

The striker serves his red-card suspension. He was sent off in the semi-final of the competition last season.

The Dutchman saw red when he played for Sevilla against Barcelona at Camp Nou back in March last year.

The most hilarious part here is that De Jong was sent off for dissent when he already had been substituted.

The attacker ironically applauded the referee's decisions was sent off from the bench.

This red card sees him suspended for two games in the Spanish Cup. It means that the earliest game he could feature in the competition is the semi-final.

It's frustrating that suspension comes at the worst possible time for both Luuk and Barcelona.

Last weekend, De Jong capped a fine performance with a match-winning goal against Mallorca.

The striker's absence complicates an already complicated situation for Xavi. The head coach has very few options up front due to Covid-19 and injuries.

He is forced to rely on youngsters like Akhomach and Jutgla.
