Xavi comments on Memphis role amid increased competition upfront

"Memphis Depay's situation is the same as everyone else. In the end, [I will play] those who deserve it, and there is a lot of competition," Xavi said in the presser ahead of the Real Madrid duel.

"Luckily, we are now able to include many first-team players in the squad list, so everyone starts fighting for their place. It's about meritocracy, will play those who deserve.

"That's what I went through. Whoever is doing better, will be in the line-up regardless of their name, and that's how we will succeed."

According to Diario Sport, Memphis is not an undisputed starter for Xavi. Luuk de Jong, who is in better form, and Ferran Torres could start ahead of him in the Spanish Super Cup.

This term so far, Memphis has played 22 games for Barcelona, scoring eight goals and providing two assists.
