UEFA vice-president Boniek: Russian clubs should be banned from European competitions

Speaking about how Russia should be punished after their military invasion of Ukraine, UEFA’s vice-president Zbigniew Boniek said: “My personal opinion is that Russian clubs should be excluded from European football.

“However, reaching consensus within UEFA is complicated and takes time. I do believe this is the only the beginning of sanctions towards Russia.”

Zenit St. Petersburg were allowed to play their UEFA Europa League Round of 16 playoff game against Real Betis on the day when Russia started invading Ukraine.

UEFA have punished Russia by stripping them of the rights to host the 2021/22 Champions League final, which will take place in Paris, but are yet to announce any sanctions towards Russian clubs.
