Ajax chief Edwin van der sar has revealed that they tried convincing Ten Hag to stay.
Van der Sar says they did all they could to convince Erik ten Hag to resist a move to Manchester United.
It was confirmed this morning that Ten Hag will take charge of United from the end of this season.
Van der Sar said: "Four and a half years is a good time, but we would have liked to keep Erik in Ajax longer. He takes the step to one of the biggest clubs in the world in a great league.
"We owe Erik a big thank you for what he has achieved with Ajax so far, but we are not done yet. At the end of the season, I will look back in more detail on his departure.
"So far it is about the last matches of the season, where we all want to take home the league title."
