CAF reveal referee for Al Ahly vs Wydad Champions League final

CAF have named South African referee Victor Gomes to take charge of the Champions League final between Al Ahly and Wydad Casablanca.

Al Ahly made their way to the final after a thumping 6-2 win on aggregate over Algerian side ES Setif in the semi-finals.

On the other hand, Wydad Casablanca managed to overcome Angola’s Petro Atletico de Luanda with a 4-2 victory to book a spot in the final.

Al Ahly will be eyeing their third consecutive title while Wydad will be aiming to collect their first Champions League trophy since 2017.

The highly-anticipated final has been surrounded by controversy recently with Al Ahly filing a complaint about the location of the venue.

Wydad will have an advantage going into the final as they will have the luxury of playing at home as CAF chose the Mohammed V Stadium as the hosting venue.

Ahead of the final, CAF revealed that South African referee Victor Gomes will officiate the clash, set to take place on Monday, May 30.

Gomes will be joined by Zakhele Siwela and Souru Phatsoane as his assistants with Helder Matinez as the fourth official and Bamlak Tessema in charge of VAR.

It’s worth noting that both sides had met in the 2020 Champions League semi-finals, where Al Ahly won 5-1 on aggregate with Gomes officiating the second leg.
