Man United's move for Darwin Nunez broke down over a case of 'food poisoning'

Just when you thought transfer stories couldn't get weirder, the window decides to surprise you.

It's no secret that Manchester United were interested in signing Darwin Nunez from Benfica - only for Liverpool to go ahead and confirm a deal.

And now, it turns out, the reason United dropped out of the race was because of a bad case of food poisoning.

As per The Athletic, a tier-one source, United were due to meet Benfica president Rui Costa to negotiate Nunez's transfer.

However, it was around the time Costa and his family were down with terrible food poisoning after celebrating his birthday. Once the meeting got postponed, United chiefs were 'unconvinced' and took it as a 'snub'.

This incident is hilarious but it also reminds one of the infamous fax incident that prevented David De Gea from joining Real Madrid back in 2015. A deal between both clubs was almost final, only for it to break down over a missed fax from a broken machine.

Nevertheless, United remain in the hunt for new signings before the window closes on September 1.
