UEFA president Ceferin: ‘European domestic leagues should have 18 teams. Two cup competitions are too much'

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has criticized the structure of European football leagues, as he told Gazzetta dello Sport: “Domestic leagues should have 18 clubs, but the presidents disagree.

“And then they also have to understand that two domestic cups is too much.”

Among the top-5 European leagues, only the Bundesliga is played with 18 teams every season – with each team playing 34 games.

Despite Ceferin’s advice to reduce the number of teams in the leagues, that is unlikely to happen, nor is the culling of the domestic cup competitions in the major football-crazy countries.
