'It's not a message that he should leave': Xavi explains why De Jong plays at centre-back

"Putting him [Frenkie de Jong] as a central defender is not a message [for him to leave]. We want the central defenders to divide their responsibilities. Frenkie is important to us," Xavi has told the media, per Relevo.

De Jong has played at centre-back in his second-straight friendly match. Against Real Madrid, the Dutchman formed a pairing with Gerard Pique.

Some fans believe this is the way of forcing the player's summer exit. The 25-year-old didn't disappoint as a defender but we all know his ideal position is in the midfield.
