Jorginho: 'It’s stupid that Euro winner doesn't qualify directly for World Cup'

"I think it’s stupid that the winner of the Euro does not go directly to the World Cup. Call FIFA, UEFA, find out the reason, because damn..." Italy midfielder Jorginho told Globo Esporte.

"Maybe I'm more outraged than before because we're not going to Qatar, but now you're dying to win, and then again you have to participate in the qualifying tournament.

"Then why win the Euro? Is it a victory for the sake of victory? The club that wins the Europa League advances to the Champions League. The winner of the Champions League performs at the club world championship. The Club World Cup is the pinnacle, there is nowhere to go further.

"And here it turns out that you win the Euro, the America's Cup, the Asian Cup, but do not qualify for the World Cup directly. It's just bullshit"

Jorginho was a part of the Italian side that defeated England at Wembley last summer and won Euro 2020.

He was also a player who missed a penalty in both of the World Cup qualifying games against Switzerland which led them to finishing second in their group. After that, they shockingly lost to North Macedonia 1-0 in the semifinal of the playoffs and missed out on the World Cup entirely.
