Jurgen Klopp said yesterday in an interview with Sky Sports when asked about the team's midfield depth and quality: "Creativity?
"If we bring in a player just for that, we immediately make it more difficult for Harvey, Curtis and Fabio. They can all play different positions as well of course, Curtis can play a line higher and Harvey and Fabio can play there too. Fine.
"We can play a different system as well, where we might only need two midfielders, but then all these guys can play as a No.10 in the new system."
Since Philippe Coutinho left, Liverpool have played a 4-3-3 system with three central midfielders, with not much goalscoring threat from this department. However, with the addition of Fabio Carvalho and Darwin Nunez, things could change.
Let's take a look at three ways Liverpool can line up in this new formation next season with a proper No.10.
Option 1: Carvalho as the No.10
This will likely be the go-to formation if Klopp does decide to field a proper No.10. Carvalho succeeded at this role for Fulham and is a good goalscoring threat who can make runs into the box.
Thiago and Fabinho are the most obvious candidates to be the two holding midfielders behind the four attackers.
Option 2: Curtis as No.10, Elliott as right winger
We don't expect to see this line up in the big games since Salah would be on the bench, but Harvey Elliott has some experience playing as the right winger and as Klopp mentioned, Curtis Jones can operate in the No.10 role.
Henderson and Fabinho sitting behind Curtis would give the Scouser more space to venture ahead and use his dribbling and passing skills. Jota's ability to drift wide and stay central will also help the Reds have a more fluid attack.
Option 3: Elliott as the No.10
Klopp also suggests using Elliott as the No.10. Elliott played as the right-sided midfielder last season in a few games with Salah ahead of him, so this position can see him drifting wide if needed as well as playing centrally.
Elliott is a more creative midfielder than Curtis, so his passing ability and quickness on the ball will be valuable here.
