Man United 'contact Icardi's representatives over potential Old Trafford move'

Manchester United have reportedly contacted PSG forward Mauro Icardi's representatives via intermediaries, as the Premier League club's search for a new striker continues.

Icardi has been left out of PSG's matchday squad for their opening two Ligue 1 matches this season, and manager Christophe Galtier has confirmed that the 29-year-old is free to leave.

United are showing an interest in the Argentine forward, and Icardi is keen on a move to Old Trafford, according to Get French Football News.

However, it is understood that PSG feel Icardi is not United's top target, and the Red Devils have not made direct contact with the French champions yet.

Interest in Icardi comes amid a disastrous start to the season for United, which has seen them lose both of their top flight games against Brighton and Brentford.

The 13-time Premier League champions are currently rooted to the foot of the table after they were thrashed 4-0 by Brentford on Saturday.

Erik ten Hag's side have shipped six goals in two matches, but scoring goals at the other end is also a major issue, leading to United desperately scouring the transfer market for a new front man.

Cristiano Ronaldo told the club last month that he wants to leave, and he was left out of the starting line-up for the team's opening fixture against Brighton, with his future at Old Trafford remaining uncertain.

Meanwhile, Anthony Martial is sidelined with a hamstring injury, leaving ten Hag short of options up top.

United's lack of firepower goes some way to explaining why they have only scored one goal this season, and that was an own goal from Brighton's Alexis Mac Allister.

The club were linked with Bologna's Marko Arnautovic last week, but they opted to pull out of a potential deal after failing to agree a fee with the Serie A outfit.

They now may have turned their attention to Icardi, who has played for some of the biggest teams in Europe during his career to date.

He spent six years at Inter between 2013 and 2019, scoring 124 goals in 319 appearances.

Icardi has since played for PSG over the last three years, including an initial loan spell, and has netted 38 goals in 92 matches, but is now deemed surplus to requirements in the French capital.
