Athletic: Ronaldo told Rangnick that Harry Maguire should be benched last season

There was massive drama brewing behind the scenes at Manchester United towards the end of last season.

According to The Athletic, a tier-one source, Cristiano Ronaldo told interim boss Ralf Rangnick that captain Harry Maguire should be benched.

The German manager felt that the conversation was 'inappropriate' without the skipper's presence because he wanted the squad to stay focused for the final games of the season.

Ronaldo believed that Maguire was 'part of the problem' at Old Trafford with the Red Devils crashing out of the Champions League and missing out on top four. In the end, new boss Erik ten Hag opted to bench both Cristiano and Maguire.
