Mainz Sporting Director Slams Todd Boehly After Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea Sacking

Mainz sporting director Christian Heidel has slammed Todd Boehly after the sacking of Thomas Tuchel.

The Chelsea chairman made the decision to part ways with the 49-year-old on Wednesday, and moved swiftly to appoint Graham Potter as his replacement just a day later.

Speaking to BILD via goal.com, Heidel, who worked with Tuchel during the coach's time at Mainz, said Boehly 'has no idea about football' and will 'bitterly regret this decision' after the German was given his marching orders.

'The sacking is grist to the mill of those who are against investors in football. It was purely an investor's decision,' said Heidel.

'Someone who has no idea about football probably thought that sixth place wasn't good enough for him and said: "Then let's try another coach" after only six games.

'I can't think of any other reason. But Chelsea will bitterly regret this decision – they won't get such a good coach again so quickly.'

Tuchel spent 18 months in charge of the Blues and delivered a Champions League trophy in his first year at the club as they looked to be struggling after the departure of Frank Lampard.

But he was appointed by former owner Roman Abramovic, and Boehly, who took over from the Russian in May, has moved quickly to appoint his own manager.

Former Brighton boss Potter has signed a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge, and higher-ups at the club are expecting a top four finish this season, but the 47-year-old will be given time to settle and will be backed even if the aim isn't achieved.

The Blues are currently sixth in the Premier League table with three wins, a draw and two defeats to their name so far this season.
