"If you buy a lot, young players don't get the chance," Pep Lijnders told a press conference when asked about FSG's spending on strengthening the squad.
"I think we invested well, bringing in Luis Diaz in the winter, it was like water in the desert, it was needed.
"Darwin is a good signing, so young, hungry. he can create five chances by himself. You have Calvin, Fabio, before that, Ibou Konate, Jota - they all hit the bullseye.
"We cannot afford to buy and not be right, the players have to add something new and special.
"We have to be right and that's what we search for. Then the most important thing was to tie down our best players. It's always a balance.
"Do people want to see 3 or 4 more players, of course but we prefer to have the right one and have time for the young ones - to make the team younger and give academy talent a chance. People see transfers as the one thing, but building a club is so much more than that."
Liverpool spent just £95.7m in the summer window, with most of the money going into the signing of Darwin Nunez. The Reds also bought Calvin Ramsay.
Despite desperately needing a midfielder, the club decided against spending big and brought Arthur on loan on the deadline day.
