Xavi previously believed that Frenkie de Jong is primarily a central midfielder, however, he has had a 'change of opinion' recently, Mundo Deportivo's reliable Gabriel Sans claims. He didn't see the midfielder as capable of playing the pivot role.
However, the coach has used Frenkie in Sergio Busquets's spot for a couple of matches and now sees him as the best available replacement for the veteran. Xavi also thinks De Jong is a good option at centre-back against deep blocks.
Thus, Barcelona do not consider selling the Dutchman in January despite needing exits. They understand that offloading the 25-year-old would weaken the team.
De Jong started the season as a bench player but he reclaimed his spot later on. So far, Frenkie has recorded two goals and one assist in 17 matches (11 starts) for Barca.
