German FA want Per Mertesacker as their new sporting director

Arsenal are now facing a battle to keep Academy manager Per Mertesacker at the club, according to Sky Germany.

German FA want the former centre-back to replace Oliver Bierhoff who resigned following their 2022 Qatar World Cup disaster.

German officials believe that the 38-year-old can develop the country's talented youngsters after yet another major tournament humiliation.

Mertesacker has been part of Arsenal's Academy since retiring from football in 2018, briefly working as Freddie Ljungberg's interim assistant manager.
