"Goal shouldn't have stood": VAR forgot to draw offside line for Toney's equalizer v Arsenal

Arsenal dropped points once again on Saturday afternoon as they drew with Brentford in their Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal were looking to get back on track against Brentford after being beaten by Everton in their previous outing.

But the Gunners were unable to get the victory they desired as they drew 1-1.

Mikel Arteta's side took the lead in the 66th minute courtesy of Leandro Trossard's strike.

But they weren't ahead for long with Ivan Toney netting the equaliser eight minutes later.

There were no further goals as the two sides shared the spoils.

Toney's equaliser was extremely controversial.

Arsenal fans felt that the goal should have been ruled out for offside.

But the goal was allowed to stand after VAR referee, Lee Mason, checked the goal.

It turns out that the goal shouldn't have stood.

PGMOL representative Chris Foy was in the Match Centre at Stockley Park on Saturday.

And he has revealed that Mason forgot to draw the lines for Toney's goal. Had he drawn the lines, Christian Norgaard would have been deemed offside and the goal disallowed.

"Ivan puts the ball in the net and VAR Lee Mason obviously runs through the checks," Foy said, per the Daily Mail.

"VAR was looking to see if there was an offside and whether Ethan Pinnock had blocked off Gabriel in the build-up. He looked at the possible foul and decided there hadn’t been one and therefore referee Peter Bankes hadn’t made a clear and obvious error.

"However, in the build-up to the goal, Christian Norgaard — whose cross it is that Toney heads in — is in an offside position.

"However, the truth is that VAR didn’t fully investigate with the lines. The lines, simply, didn’t go down. And that counts as human error. Had the lines gone down the goal would have been disallowed for offside."
