Chelsea's poor run of form continued as they were beaten by Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the Blues' struggles in recent times, they were still expected to comfortably beat Southampton, who were rock-bottom in the Premier League going into the game.

But Chelsea were unable to secure just their second victory of 2023 as they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

James Ward-Prowse's exquisite free-kick just before half-time proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Graham Potter has failed to transform Chelsea's fortunes since replacing Thomas Tuchel in September.

The Englishman has won just nine of his 25 matches as Chelsea manager.

The Blues handed Potter a five-year deal but some fans of the club have already had enough.

In fact, one Chelsea fan told a report that Potter was 'the worst manager in the club's history' following their loss to Southampton.

The reporter then relayed that comment to Potter in his post-match press conference.

The reporter asked Potter: "It's only a short walk from the press box but I got approached by two Chelsea fans on the way here. Negative feedback: one said you had to go, the other called you the worst manager in the club's history. How do you respond to the criticism and what do you say to fans like that?"

Potter replied: "After a 1-0 defeat at home, any criticism you get is understandable.

"I think we have had a tough period and I think we have had lots of challenges in terms of integrating younger players into the Premier League."

"When results don't go your way it can be tough, that's how it is. I'm sure there will be people out there who think that I'm the problem. I don't think that they are right but I am not arrogant enough to say that their opinion isn't worth articulating.

"My job is to help the team and keep working through a tough period. I had to make some changes today... the truth is we took a step back in terms of our performance in the first half. The response in the second half was good but obviously it wasn't good enough."
