Heartbreaking Djed Spence's reaction to Rennes elimination from the Europa league goes viral

Djed Spence couldn't help prevent Stade Rennais from suffering Europa League heartbreak.

The French side lost their play-off tie with Shakhtar Donetsk on Thursday evening in the most heartbreaking fashion possible - a penalty shootout.

After Rennes secured a 2-1 win in France, which levelled things on aggregate at 3-3, the opposition's goalkeeper, Anatoliy Trubin, went into 'beast mode'.

The 21-year-old saved three penalties to book Shakhtar's place in the Europa League last-16, Jeremy Doku, Birger Meling and Lesley Ugochukwu his victims.

Trubin's water bottle certainly came in handy at Roazhon Park...

Well played, Anatoliy.

So it was yet another disappointing night for Spence in what's been a disappointing season for the English full-back thus far.

Spence burst onto the scene last campaign at Nottingham Forest, helping the club secure promotion to the Premier League.

His energetic performances on the right in 2021/22 earned him a prestigious move to Tottenham Hotspur, but game time was near enough impossible to come by under Antonio Conte.

That's changed to a degree in Rennes, with Spence playing the full 120 minutes against Shakhtar on Thursday - albeit in a losing cause.

He did at least go viral in the immediate aftermath of the game, though, which is something, right?

Spence's reaction towards the cameraman following Rennes' elimination was pretty funny to be fair - and slightly understandable as well.

Check it out...

Fair play, Djed.

Although his actions mean the sight of Rennes players looking downbeat has actually travelled further and wider than it would have had he not intervened...
