‘Ake’s been in the box 5 minutes and he’s better’ –Man United fans baffled as Weghorst STILL can’t score vs 10-man Gibraltar
Wout Weghorst's performance for the Netherlands last night has got Manchester United fans talking after they registered a staggering 51 shots against Gibraltar.
Despite all their efforts, Ronald Koeman's side only managed to score three goals in the Euro 2024 qualifier on Monday.
And Manchester City defender Nathan Ake scored two of his national team's goals, with Memphis Depay also getting on the score-sheet.
The lack of goals from Weghorst has worried some Man United fans online, having failed to hit the back of the net against the European minnows.
The Netherlands had 51 shots, with 12 of them being on target. That being said, the towering forward was upstaged by Ake, who bagged a brace.
Some Man United supporters on social media took aim at Weghorst's inability to score against Gibraltar, while other argued the 30-year-old is proving to be a shrewd signing under Erik ten Hag.
One Twitter user wrote: "Ake scoring a brace in a team that has Weghorst as a Striker Lmao."
A second tweeted: "Wout Weghorst can’t be a starter after the international break. He is just terrible."
A third hit back at the criticism: "Weirdly, Weghorst gets trolled the most by our own fans. What happened to supporting our own?"
A fourth said: "51 shots and NO goals from Weghorst."
Another argued: "Slandering Weghorst means you don't know ball, he's Ten Hag's beloved CF. Literally a Ten Hag striker, the ultimate pressing monster, a great who changed & reform football, the very first defensive striker."
Weghorst has bagged just two goals since his loan move in January. He's yet to score in the Premier League this season, having scored in the Carabao Cup and the Europa League.
Even though he hasn't been prolific, there have been suggestions his loan could be made a permanent deal in the summer.
Will Weghorst still be a Man United player from next season? Watch this space.
